The journey of a nontraditional college grad & entrepreneur

Why I’m not getting a job..

on April 20, 2010

Everything you’re ever told in college is for the eventual purpose of graduating and getting a job.  The professors repeating this endlessly to every class for the past 15 years of their career know nothing else but to get a job just like they have.  The common student obediently listens and does everything to the T for the benefit of their resume and the eventuality that they will submit it to a firm and be welcomed with open arms into the flocks of the drudging corporate workers.

What the professors DON’T tell their students is that when you get a job you are selling your life to the soulless corporations who most often view you as dispensable.  You spend your time, energy, and whatever enthusiasm and creativity you may have left for the purpose of performing for the man in the desk above you.  In return you receive the almighty paycheck, which tends to be taxed almost to disappearance, and you go on doing it over and over and over again.

Does that sound like a worthwhile use of your time, talents and hard-earned ( not to mention expensive) education?  HELL NO.  I would much rather think of a dream “job” and create it for myself, in other words, create a career for myself and by myself for the purpose of serving myself.  The very idea of getting a “secure job” that is entirely dependent on someone else’s company, someone else’s management and someone else entirely scares me half to death.  I didn’t work through community college, university and survive into my 20′s to subject myself to someone else.  What happens when they don’t need you anymore?  Well then you’re shit out of luck.

I’m here to start a REVOLUTION in the way college students think about their futures.  Stop thinking about getting a job, start thinking about creating a career for yourself.  Trust yourself, rely on yourself, you will make it and the satisfaction you get out of it will be a hundred times more than trudging through the trenches or clawing your way up to the top of a company.

So join me, and take your future by the horns and get out there!

I definitely understand this. but… with almost $200k in debt for undergrad/grad degrees (thank you private school), I’m not sure if this is even feasible. I’m planning to not start with a “career” job at first, but more so work internationally or with an NGO (which is my career path) so I CAN get a career job later. I do feel as if my degree is “enough” to get a job, but do I want to sit in an office for the next 40 years? helllll no.

I’m in the same boat unfortunately (yay private school!).. If you want something bad enough you can make it happen. But i do like your idea as I studied in international business :) These days it also seems like while an undergrad proves you can finish something, if you hope to get anything better than typical entry level the grad degree is essential. Good Luck!

Awesome – we need more “graduates” like you. This country would be in better shape today if more of us were looking out for ourselves rather than just getting in line.

    • kaitvinson says:

I totally agree. My gen needs to get its act together haha
Thankfully I know so many people doing something like me :)

There’s a third option: You can also join a small business, which is basically just someone else who struck out on their own. That’s what I did, and it’s great. Just as personal and with nearly all of the benefits of striking out on your own, without all the pressure of making sure that you take care of every detail by yourself.

    • kaitvinson says:

Exactly! I have been a part of the 3rd option since I was about 11. I’ve been working with my father’s small business (less than 5 employees) for years. Without that experience and the continued learning as I am still partnering with him, I never would have had the knowledge or the confidence to take the plunge.

Liked reading what you posted Kait. Nothing is more satisfying than working for yourself. But to pay off college debts and create some savings which you can use in your entrepreneurial venture, one is ‘forced’ to take up a corporate job

    • kaitvinson says:

Not always. If you get in the right market and the right time you don’t necessarily have to take a corporate job to support debts and create savings.

i feel the same EXACT way…thought i was crazy…nice to see im not the only one ;-) . i’m still working on figuring out what actually want to do! what kind of business are you hoping to start?

I REALLY love your blog! You have very similar thoughts to me on the whole getting a job concept. I graduated in June and spent the summer looking for jobs, with no luck, until I decided I just didn’t really want a “job”. I’m continuing the search, solely for a way to support myself until I figure something out, but in the meantime I’ve been doing a lot of research on creative money making schemes and building my online presence, so eventually I’ll be able to create my own career. Looks like your on the right track. Good Luck with everything!

    • kaitvinson says:

      Thank you!!
I checked out your blog, it looks like you’ve really put some work into it! Great job! I take it that it’s all going well :)
